Hungarian Breakfast in Budapest: 3 Local Dishes to Try

Last updated: 28 October 2026 · Written by the Cosy Café Budapest team

Looking for a Hungarian breakfast in Budapest? Every country has its own breakfast, and Hungary’s is hearty, savoury and homely – built on fresh bread, eggs, sausage, paprika, peppers and onions. At Cosy Café Budapest, between Oktogon and Nyugati Railway Station at Szondi u. 11., you can try three Hungarian favourites all day: Hungarian-style scrambled eggs, bundáskenyér (Hungarian eggy bread) and homemade tócsni (potato rösti).

In this guide we explain what Hungarians eat for breakfast, what each dish is, and where to try them in downtown Budapest.

What do Hungarians eat for breakfast?

A traditional Hungarian breakfast is filling and mostly savoury: fresh white bread, eggs, cold cuts or sausage, fresh peppers and tomatoes, and often something spicy with paprika. On weekdays it’s often quick, but at weekends breakfast becomes a slower, shared meal with family or friends – which is exactly why Hungarian dishes fit so well into today’s brunch culture.

1. Hungarian-style scrambled eggs (magyaros rántotta)

One of the most popular Hungarian breakfasts is magyaros rántotta – scrambled eggs the Hungarian way. Ours is made with 3 eggs, sausage, onion, pepper and tomato, and served with salad and bread (4,390 Ft). It’s simple, filling and perfect for a slow weekend brunch.

Prefer something milder? You can also have classic, cheese, ham or vegetable scrambled eggs – or our vegan tofu scramble.

2. Hungarian eggy bread (bundáskenyér)

Bundáskenyér is bread dipped in egg and fried golden – Hungary’s savoury cousin of French toast. Unlike French toast, it isn’t sweet: Hungarians eat it with something savoury, and we serve it with garlic sour cream and salad. Besides the classic version, we have two heartier ones:

  • bundáskenyér with ham and cheddar;
  • bundáskenyér with bacon and sausage.

3. Homemade potato rösti (tócsni)

Tócsni – also called lapcsánka in some regions – is a crispy pancake made from grated potato, one of the best-known tastes of a Hungarian grandmother’s kitchen. Ours is homemade and part of our American breakfast with 2 fried eggs and bacon (3,990 Ft). You can also add it to any breakfast (990 Ft).

Something sweet: pancakes

Hungarians love pancakes too – traditionally thin, crêpe-style ones, while brunch culture has brought in the thick, fluffy American version. At Cosy Café you can order American pancakes:

  • with fruit and a topping of your choice (chocolate, caramel, maple or strawberry);
  • with Nutella and Kinder Bueno;
  • with bacon, maple syrup and butter – a sweet-and-savoury combination.

Lighter options

If you’d like something lighter, try homemade granola with yoghurt, fruit and jam, or:

  • avocado toast with a poached egg;
  • chia pudding with coconut milk and fruit;
  • freshly squeezed orange juice and smoothies.
